There are a number of reasons to participate! 1. It's Biblical. No, you won't find 'celebrate your pastor in October' within scripture, but you will see scriptural encouragements to honour and care for those who serve in ministry: “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of [...]

Will YOU help scatter seed to grow God's Kingdom? "The Kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, while he’s asleep or awake, the seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it happens.” Mark 4:26-27 (NLT). I love our Canadian prairies. This summer, I got to spend some time connecting with my heritage in Italy – arguably one of the most beautiful countries in the world. There, I was captivated by Italy's grandiose architecture, its varied and picturesque [...]

Surprised by the Spirit

I grew up singing and praying in a number of different Baptist, Salvation Army, and (primarily) Pentecostal churches. Each church was unique in how they worshiped God, and each had distinct perspectives regarding what it meant to experience the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit worked. The first time that I remember having a real experience of the Holy Spirit was in Greenwood, in a modest Pentecostal church with brick and white siding and gravel in the parking lot. This is where the Spirit called me to put my faith in God. I was nine years old. I sat in [...]

Horizon College students are required to participate in weekly practical ministry as part of their education. This year, our students have contributed more than 700 hours of hands-on ministry since September! We invited our ministry mentors and students to gather and celebrate the impact this year's ministry has had – not only on those ministered to, but on our students and the mentors themselves. Horizon student body president, Deloney Krahn shared these words: "Ministry Formation has given us all volunteer experience in ministry. It has helped us learn to lead, it has helped some of [...]

Does the Church need Pastors or “Leaders”?

2022-04-09T10:05:49-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: , , |

"Leadership" seems like a buzz word among Christians these days. Between the newness of the study of "leadership,"[1] and the fact that there is nothing inherently Christian about "leadership," some Christians express concern that the emphasis on leadership makes churches unknowingly bring secular business theories (by which they mean anti-Christian theories) into the church. One might also argue that the Bible talks more about "pastors" than "leaders" or "leadership." In actual fact, however, in most English translations of the Bible, the word "leader" in its various forms occurs many times, whereas the word "pastor" is only found once (Ephesians 4:11). Yeah... [...]
