Why We (Think We Don’t) Need Christian Higher Education

If you're asking the question "Why would I pay for Christian higher education?", I get it. A few years ago I began a working relationship with Horizon College & Seminary, and as a result I have been challenged to examine why I (and many others I know) have seemingly felt a general indifference towards Christian post-secondary institutions. I haven't studied the subject, but it seems to me that personal and spiritual development– even within traditionally Christian families– is continually being lowered further and further down the list of "worthy investments". Sure, we all agree it's worth something. Just not our [...]

Lifting the Burden

The Canadian Mental Health Association is observing Mental Health Week in Saskatchewan. The subject of mental health is tough but timely, and likely one you've already heard much about or have direct experience with. With all the helpful and informative initiatives encouraging us to speak openly about our struggles and seek support, the reality is, there is still just so much struggle. And, unfortunately, it is not going away anytime soon. It's also worth noting that Christ-followers are not immune or exempt from depression, anxiety, worry, or any other mental or emotional health issues either. [...]

A Vision in 1935

In 1935, pastor George Hawtin had a vision to "train tomorrow's leaders." His dream birthed a Christian leadership college, that through perseverance and providence, has become what it is today - Horizon College & Seminary. Horizon has been innovating ways to train Christian leaders for the past 85 years. This brings us to 2021. Horizon is making a landmark move by relocating to a customized, state-of-the-art facility. Serving as a multi-denominational hub in the heart of the Canadian prairies, the facility is built with tomorrow’s Christian leaders in mind. Its design incorporates efficient, flexible meeting spaces and [...]

Leadership Matters

This may seem like an obvious statement, but people often tend to shy away from the terms 'leader' and 'leadership'– perhaps because of feelings of inadequacy, negative experiences, or misconceptions on the subject. But leadership is so important, for all of us. Here are some thoughts on what good leadership is and why it matters. Why is competence in leadership so important? Competent leadership was at the heart of what Jesus did when he called his disciples to go out and transform the world with his message. Leaders at all levels in our world today [...]

Telling a Robust God-Story

According to The Millenial Mosaic, 2019: Almost HALF of millennials believe that the growth of atheism is good for Canada and prefer to live without God or congregation. What does this mean for the church? We have things like COVID come along, mass social injustice, a world that seems to be coming apart… and there are all kinds of narratives one can try to find to explain these things (political, sociological, etc). As Christians, we DO have a story that makes sense of our world. We HAVE a story, but based on the data, we've neglected telling that story in a [...]

A Book Called Meh

I don't often recommend books I haven't yet read, but I recently did with Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer, A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture (Tyndale, 2020). Partly this was because I thought the topic to be timely. I'm sick of hearing about prominent "celebrity" pastors failing and their ministries' toxic celebrity culture brushing off victims and voices in opposition. McKnight and Barringer (McKnight's daughter) had both attended Willow Creek in the past with front-row seats to their handling of Bill Hybels' fail. I also recommended the book sight unseen because I very much like and trust Scot [...]

Leading through the COVID-19 Crisis – Lessons on the Run

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everybody. Within the span of a week, it put our small, non-profit organization into a cash-flow crisis, forcing us into temporary wage reductions and layoffs to reduce expenses initially by approximately 66% and requiring us quickly to identify new ways to generate income. As we've been forced to make quick, high-consequence decisions and to take unplanned, unhappy actions over a remarkably short period, I've been circumspect on my thoughts. Writing helps me think, and my thoughts took the form of advice offered to a senior leader (myself), describing the steps I see myself taking to [...]
