The ‘None and Done’ Opportunity

2021-11-08T13:20:04-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: , |

We all know that COVID has had an effect on the body of believers and our churches, but certainly there are other challenges that existed well beforehand. One such being the growing group of people in our world who are 'none and done' with the faith. Increasingly we see those who never have or no longer profess faith in God.How can the church reach out to this post-Christian generation? As we take inventory and consider what is essential to our faith, it really is a beautiful invitation to go back to our basics, back to our first love, back to our calling - [...]

What if Zebedee Said, “No”?

2021-11-08T13:20:10-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: |

Lately, I find myself thinking about Zebedee. A minor New Testament character, Zebedee appears only when James and John abandon him and his hired hands on his fishing boat as they leave to follow Jesus (Mark 1:19-20). Zebedee never shows up again, though his name recurs repeatedly in association both with James and John and with their mother, his wife, Salome (Mark 15:40). As a Roman-era Jewish patriarch, Zebedee's authority over his family was absolute. Additionally, as an employer of others Zebedee likely had greater means, status, and influence than many in his trade. So when James and John respond [...]

Keep Moving Forward

As we reflect on the '94 Calls to Action,' we want you to know that there are opportunities to continue this important learning journey. Canada has federally declared September 30 as Truth and Reconciliation Day, acknowledging our Indigenous peoples. In recognition of this day we are bringing in an Indigenous Christian leader, Andrew Thunder, to lead us in corporate worship and direct our staff in a workshop the following day. As a Christian organization this is an important part of our own professional development and, in the language of our competencies, our contextual awareness. It is also a constructive, [...]

The Church After COVID

2023-06-01T11:02:37-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: , |

Who can tell us (humanly speaking, of course) what has happened to the church since COVID hit? Well, here are a few guys who've had their eyes on things and have credible insight to offer. Back in January we asked four of Canada's denominational leaders, "What are you seeing at the local level, and how are our churches responding to the challenges of COVID?" Even several months later, what they had to say still rings true, possibly even more-so. I will paraphrase a few of their thoughts, but I hope you will pause and take the time to listen to this [...]

In Reach

2025-08-22T08:01:04-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: |

Do you find yourself stepping in to serve, leading in front of or behind the scenes, passionate to use your gifts and talents to serve the Kingdom of God? Service and a commitment to grow in the knowledge of grace is a lifelong endeavor for followers of Christ. Christian higher education is an excellent tool to help us steward our lives well. Yet it often feels out of reach. Have you considered taking a course? A program? It's not always possible to pursue an exclusively ministerial career path, interrupt work, switch fields, or move to a new city [...]

Forging a Path: Talk 2 - Part 3 This is a continuation of the second installment in our series of discussions on Indigenous reconciliation and the church. Jimmy and Andrew Thunder help us to examine Calls 59 and 60 of the '94 Calls to Action' - as directed to the Christian church.  My church, your church, our generation, did not create this problem - and yet, we have inherited it. It is time to accept this as part of our history, grieve it, and respond with love. Hosted by president Dr. Jeromey Martini, this interview features two Horizon alumni: brothers, [...]

Treaty No 1

2023-05-24T13:43:03-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: |

Today marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 1. This is not only significant for our friends in Manitoba but for all Canadians as this was the first of the eleven numbered treaties that were signed after confederation and are an important part of our history. As Christians are reflecting on what it means to be in good relation with each other, it is useful to contrast the treaty-making process with the implementation of the Indian Act. This webinar by Jean Friesen on behalf of Canada's History and the Treaty Relation Commission of Manitoba is one of the assigned [...]

94 Calls, Part II

2023-06-21T12:10:33-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: |

Forging a Path: Talk 2, Part II   This is part 2 of our second talk in our series of discussions on Indigenous reconciliation and the church. In this section, Jimmy and Andrew Thunder lead us in a deeper dive into the '94 Calls to Action' looking specifically at some of the calls directed to the Christian church.  As believers, we need to understand the doctrines that have been used under the banner of faith to reinforce acts of legislation that lead to the oppression of Indigenous peoples. This will help us to be aware of the barriers that exist [...]

94 Calls

Forging a Path: Talk 2 Following the horrific discoveries of Indigenous children's remains found in unmarked graves around the country's residential schools, here is the next installment in a series of discussions featuring two Horizon alumni: brothers, Andrew and Jimmy Thunder.
