An Unexpected Journey

Have you ever had to eat your words? When I addressed staff and students in fall 2019,  I told them to prepare for an uneventful year. (You can see where this is going...) It's a transition year, I reasoned. We're winding-down at Jackson Ave before relocating to our new campus (we thought) later that summer. I compared us to the second and, I suggested, least exciting instalment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers. Fans of the trilogy know the second instalment describes what takes place between the action – after the heroes have received their quest [...]

Faith in Action

During this time of waiting precipitated by COVID-19, Pastor Bob challenges us to live out the gospel by finding the right mix of faith and practical works to make an explosive impact on our world. Most of us know the story about the day that started as an ordinary teaching session between Jesus and his disciples but turned into a mega-event hosting an audience of over 5,000. Jesus had compassion on the crowd, talking to them until day stretched into evening and everyone started getting hungry. In what we have come to know as the miracle of feeding the five thousand, [...]

Are you listening?

In a time when we all have unprecedented access to information and are inundated daily with a constant stream of messages, Pastor Bob reminds us of the importance of taking time each day to absorb the messages in God's word. Clearly, electronics touches countless aspects of our lives nowadays, but how many of us have any understanding of just how they really work? Focusing on a small facet of this modern phenomenon demonstrates how far electronics have come since the 1930s. Nearly all of our electronics back then were run by a small sealed glass tube. A high voltage was [...]

A Book Called Meh

I don't often recommend books I haven't yet read, but I recently did with Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer, A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture (Tyndale, 2020). Partly this was because I thought the topic to be timely. I'm sick of hearing about prominent "celebrity" pastors failing and their ministries' toxic celebrity culture brushing off victims and voices in opposition. McKnight and Barringer (McKnight's daughter) had both attended Willow Creek in the past with front-row seats to their handling of Bill Hybels' fail. I also recommended the book sight unseen because I very much like and trust Scot [...]

Psalms for Divine Protection from COVID-19

2023-05-26T16:02:04-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: , |

The Psalms have gained prominence among Christians since the rise of COVID-19. Psalm 91 has been particularly popular. This is understandable given that it speaks of how God will save you "from the deadly disease" (v. 3, NLT), and the assurance that "pestilence" and "plague" (v. 6, NIV) "will not come near you" (v. 7). How are we to interpret such claims in the Psalms? What are we to think when we read that "no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent" (Psalm 91:10)? Promises to Claim? Some conclude that such words are God's promises that we [...]

COVID-19 Is NOT the End of the World – 100% Guaranteed!

2023-05-26T16:01:58-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: |

Recently, I was interviewed about theological implications of COVID-19 by Pastor Leyton Erickson at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Saskatoon. The discussion starts by asking why God allows suffering and expands to wonder how such a God can be good? We then discuss whether the current COVID-19 pandemic represents the biblical End. I’ve included a link to the video interview here. https://youtu.be/471tSmOAhLo Over the next couple weeks, I’ll unpack here some of what I shared (so subscribe to this post if you want to keep up!). Starting with the last discussion first, I’ll begin today by declaring definitively that COVID-19 100% does not [...]

Leading through the COVID-19 Crisis – Lessons on the Run

2023-05-26T16:01:51-06:00Categories: Articles|Tags: , |

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everybody. Within the span of a week, it put our small, non-profit organization into a cash-flow crisis, forcing us into temporary wage reductions and layoffs to reduce expenses initially by approximately 66% and requiring us quickly to identify new ways to generate income. As we've been forced to make quick, high-consequence decisions and to take unplanned, unhappy actions over a remarkably short period, I've been circumspect on my thoughts. Writing helps me think, and my thoughts took the form of advice offered to a senior leader (myself), describing the steps I see myself taking to [...]
