History of Horizon Seminary

A Legacy of Partnership and Growth

Horizon Seminary has a rich history of preparing Spirit-empowered Christian leaders. Since 1968, the seminary has evolved through partnerships, accreditation milestones, and program expansions, shaping graduate-level theological education across Canada.

Seminary Beginnings (1968)

Horizon’s seminary heritage began in 1968, when Central Pentecostal College partnered with Lutheran Theological Seminary (LTS) at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. The partnership was initiated by Dr. Ronald Kydd, who became its first graduate with a Master of Divinity in 1968. Dr. Kydd went on to a distinguished academic career, completing a PhD (St. Andrews) before serving as academic dean and president at Central and on faculty at Eastern Pentecostal College (now Master’s College and Seminary) and Tyndale Seminary. The arrangement made Central the first Pentecostal college in Canada to offer a seminary pathway. (See also LTS history)

For almost forty years, the Central–LTS partnership prepared university graduates for vocational ministry.

New Horizons (2007)

In 2007, after Central became Horizon College and Seminary, Horizon expanded its partnerships to include Providence Theological Seminary at Providence University in Manitoba. This arrangement introduced Pentecostal Studies and Leadership tracks at the graduate level, allowing students to complete much of their master’s work through Horizon while earning Providence degrees.

In the following years Horizon expanded transfer agreements with other seminaries, creating new pathways for graduate study across Canada.

Independence (2018)

In 2018, Dr. Susan Wendel led Horizon through the process of establishing an independent seminary. Horizon achieved accreditation with ABHE in 2020 and in 2023 became an associate member of ATS.

Partnership with MCS (2023)

In 2023 Horizon partnered with Master’s College and Seminary (MCS), strengthening seminary education within the joint Horizon–MCS framework. Horizon Seminary now offers a full suite of accredited graduate programs, including MA degrees and the Master of Divinity, accessible online and across Canada. Within this partnership, Master’s Pentecostal Seminary (MPS) continues to serve students who wish to pursue Pentecostal-specific graduate studies.

A Growing Future

Horizon Seminary is now experiencing rapid year-over-year growth, with students engaged in graduate-level studies from Canada’s east coast to Vancouver Island. This momentum reflects both our long legacy of innovation and our vision for the future, as Horizon prepares to expand its impact through new programs and fresh approaches to equipping leaders for the changing needs of the church in Canada and beyond.
