Serving Students, Forming Leaders: Rev. Cheryl Ritskes Joins Horizon and MCS

Horizon College & Seminary and Master’s College & Seminary (MCS) is pleased to announce that Rev. Cheryl Ritskes is joining our faculty as an Instructor and Associate Director of Student Engagement, with her role beginning in July of 2026.

In addition to her academic training (B.A., B.Ed., and M.T.S.), Cheryl is an ordained minister with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada.

Pastor Cheryl brings a unique blend of ministry experience, having served as a pastor for eleven years, first on the prairies in rural Alberta (Chauvin) and then at a primarily Ghanaian church in the city of Toronto. In the last few years, Cheryl has also served as an adjunct instructor with MCS and Horizon and at Pan Africa Christian University in Nairobi, Kenya.

Dr. Andrew Gabriel, VP Academics at Horizon and MCS, remarks, “We are blessed to have Pastor Cheryl join our faculty. She has demonstrated pastoral wisdom and a commitment to seeing our students formed in the image of Christ and as ministers of the gospel.”

Pastor Cheryl will serve at the MCS campus in Mississauga. As Associate Director of Student Engagement, Pastor Cheryl will direct MCS and Horizon’s undergraduate Ministry Formation program and, alongside other staff, support students on campus and across our national network of Church Hubs.

Spring 2026 update from Dr. Jeromey Martini |President, Horizon College & Seminary & Master’s College & Seminary

Dear friends,

Two years ago, Horizon College & Seminary and Master’s College & Seminary stepped into something bold—an “experiment” of partnership.

Today, the results are clear: the experiment is working.

We are glad to report that at the end of this year, we have just shy of 300 students. Next year, we will surpass that. This represents significant growth compared to where both institutions stood prior to the partnership.

Even more encouraging is the strength of recent first-year intakes. Over the past two years, incoming new student numbers have been strong, positioning the institution for continued momentum in the years ahead.

A National Movement: The Rise of Hubs

One of the most exciting developments has been the expansion of Church Hubs—local learning communities connected to the colleges.

In just two years, Hubs have spread from Newfoundland to British Columbia, creating a truly national footprint. And the growth isn’t slowing down.

In fact, this movement is still in its early adopter phase, with significant opportunity ahead. Churches and communities across the country are invited to become part of this expanding network.

Introducing the MA in Pastoral Psychotherapy — Applications Now Open for Fall 2026!

We’re excited to share about a new program at Horizon Seminary! The Master of Arts in Pastoral Psychotherapy (MAPP) degree is now accepting applications for Fall 2026.

This 54-credit graduate degree prepares students for professional practice with eligibility for registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) — an important step toward serving in regulated clinical settings.

Meet the Program Coordinator, Heather Tomes.

A Saskatchewan girl at heart, Heather Tomes travelled to over 15 countries around the world as a global worker before returning to Saskatoon to serve as the first female Executive Director at Christian Counselling Services, and then as the Clinical Director.

Heather is a Registered Psychologist with Authorized Practice Endorsement (#772; Saskatchewan College of Psychologists), has a Master of Education in School and Counselling Psychology (University of Saskatchewan), and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with Honours from the University of Saskatchewan.

Heather is also the Program Coordinator for the Master of Arts in Clinical Pastoral Counselling program.

“I first met Dr. Strauss – Harry – when he was co-chairing the Saskatoon Evangelical Ministerial Fellowship, or SEMF. SEMF was flourishing under Harry’s leadership, bringing together pastors and ministry leaders of all evangelical denominations and stripes into a genuine Christian fellowship. It was a highlight for many ministering around this city.

My relationship with Harry deepened when he invited me to participate in another group he was co-chairing, the Evangelical-Roman Catholic Dialogue Group. Again, Harry’s leadership brought together disparate peoples into affable fellowship, resulting in a document that outlined areas of commonality and of uncompromising difference between evangelicals and Catholics, and ways we might collaborate to see God’s Kingdom purposes advance in society.

When Horizon needed to hire someone to take leadership over managing our internship program and all the church relations that requires, I immediately thought of Harry Strauss. As providence would have it, Horizon’s needs coincided precisely with Harry’s retirement from Forest Grove Community Church – the very building we’re in now.

Harry joined Horizon with an initial five-year commitment – which we’re grateful he’s stretched a little longer. Unsurprisingly, we have flourished under Harry’s leadership – first in our internship and ministry formation programs, then when Harry turned his attention to our seminary.

Harry – you’ve been an invaluable addition to our Horizon team and it is with reluctance we release you to a happy retirement.”

New Partnership Brings English Language Education to Quebec Churches

We’re excited to share some wonderful news for our English-speaking churches in Quebec!

Horizon College & Seminary and Master’s College and Seminary (MCS) are thrilled to announce a new partnership with our sister college, Institut Biblique du Québec (IBQ), to expand access to quality, Christian education in English.

Through this new agreement, Horizon and MCS will jointly offer English-language courses for students in the District of Quebec. This marks an important step in equipping and empowering English-speaking believers in Quebec to pursue theological education and ministry training without having to leave the province.

May 14, 2025 | Dr. Jeromey Martini, President of Horizon College & Seminary and Master’s College & Seminary, signs the agreement alongside Rev. Paul Tétreault, Superintendent of the PAOC Quebec District, and Dr. Jonathan Bersot, President of IBQ.

IBQ will continue to play a vital role in the lives of these students by providing mentoring, coaching, and pastoral care throughout their academic journey. This ensures that students benefit not only from the excellent academic instruction provided by Horizon and MCS, but also from the relational and spiritual support that IBQ is known for.

This new initiative is designed specifically for English-speaking students. French-speaking students will continue their education through IBQ’s partnership with Université Laval.

We believe this partnership is a Spirit-led response to the unique needs of Quebec’s English-speaking church communities. By coming together in unity and purpose, we are opening doors for more leaders to be trained, equipped, and sent into the harvest field.

We’re looking forward to what God will do through this new initiative, and we invite you to pray with us as we take this exciting step forward in serving the Church in Quebec.

Un nouveau partenariat offre une éducation en anglais aux églises du Québec

Nous sommes ravis de partager une excellente nouvelle pour nos églises anglophones au Québec !

Horizon College & Seminary et Master’s College and Seminary (MCS) sont heureux d’annoncer un nouveau partenariat avec leur collège affilié, l’Institut Biblique du Québec (IBQ), afin d’élargir l’accès à une éducation chrétienne de qualité en anglais.

Grâce à cette nouvelle entente, Horizon et MCS offriront conjointement des cours en anglais aux étudiants du district du Québec. Il s’agit d’une étape importante pour former et outiller les croyants anglophones du Québec afin qu’ils puissent poursuivre une formation théologique et un entraînement au ministère sans devoir quitter la province.

L’IBQ continuera de jouer un rôle essentiel dans la vie de ces étudiants en offrant mentorat, accompagnement et soutien pastoral tout au long de leur parcours académique. Counselling the People of the Prairies

Walking through the door, I looked at the panel of people seated at the table in front of me. Warm smiles and curious glances gazed back. I took my seat, tightly gripping the folder in my hand. Nervousness mixed with excitement filled me as I sat down for the interview.

I was fresh out of graduate school, having graduated with my master’s degree in counselling psychology from a large university on the Canadian Prairies.

I couldn’t help but wonder if any of these people knew this wasn’t the first time I’d walked through these doors. This Christian counselling centre that helped so many people over the past thirty years had also been a refuge for my hurting heart.

Memories washed over me from my teen years, when my exasperated mother hauled me off to meet with a Christian counsellor. I’d walked through these same doors and found myself sitting across the desk from a middle-aged lady. At the time, I was angry, hurt, and had no desire to talk to anyone. Yet somehow, through her warm, kind demeanour and engaging questions, she gained my trust.

Leaving her office that day, a dream was born in my heart to impact lives for Christ, the way this Christian counsellor had impacted mine.

Years later, after serving long-term as a global worker in war-torn Eastern Europe, I was returning home, depleted and burned out. Witnessing the aftermath of a brutal war, along with the trauma and grief inflicted on innocent people, shattered basic assumptions I carried about humanity, the nature of good and evil, and God’s intervention in the world. Once again, I found myself entering the doors of this Christian counselling centre with a load too heavy for my twenty-something soul to carry.

Saskatchewan is known as the “land of living skies.”¹

Growing up here, I understand the origin of this slogan firsthand. I’ve watched the sky painted with glorious hues of red, orange, and yellow as the sun sets over the North Saskatchewan River. I’ve seen the dark night sky lit up by the dancing northern lights casting their ribbons of white, green, and purple across the great prairie expanse.

Over the years, serving as the executive director and lead psychologist of a Christian counselling ministry in the land of living skies brought a different landscape into my view.

From the chair in my clinical office, I witnessed the lives of the people of the Prairies. I cried with mothers who lost their children too soon, asking why God would allow this to happen. I sat with farmers, weary of trying to survive another year financially, uncertain if God heard their prayers. I held space for youth, arms covered in scars from self-harm, searching for hope and meaning.

This clinical landscape showed me that people bring hard theological questions to the counselling space. It also demonstrated the vital need for safe counselling spaces where hard theological questions can be processed with caring, competent Christian mental health professionals.

The prairie horizon continues to hold great opportunity for Christian mental health professionals to play a key role in providing accessible mental health services.

The emerging generation, known as Generation Z, are more likely to experience mental health issues than any previous generation.² While daunting, the good news is that 68 percent consider themselves religious and recognize a positive correlation between their religious commitments and mental health flourishing.³ These youth also demonstrate a strong willingness to access therapy and to personally pay for effective mental health care, even if it’s not covered by their health benefits.⁴

Reflecting on my personal journey, I am grateful for the Christian counsellors who were there when I needed them. I pray many more would respond to this opportunity to meet the needs of the generations coming behind us.

About Heather

Heather Tomes is a registered psychologist licensed to practice in Saskatchewan. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (Honours) from the University of Saskatchewan, and a Master of Education in School and Counselling Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan.

She serves as the Program Coordinator in the Counselling Department at Horizon Seminary and is the faculty supervisor for students completing their counselling practicums. In addition to her academic work and teaching, Heather works professionally in private practice as the founder of Living Well Psychology, providing supervision and consultation to provisional psychologists, registered counsellors, businesses, churches, and community organizations.

New MAML Program Coordinator

Announcing Dr. Carmen Kampman as the New Program Coordinator for the M.A. in Ministry Leadership Program at Horizon Seminary

Dr. Carmen Kampman will begin serving as the Coordinator for our M.A. in Ministry Leadership program and our Master of Divinity (M.Div.) program.

Dr. Kampman joined the faculty of Horizon and Master’s College & Seminary (MCS), in August 2024 as Assistant Professor of Leadership & Spiritual Formation.

Dr. Jeromey Martini, President of Horizon observes,

“Dr. Kampman is a proven executive leader with a history of mobilizing and coaching people towards strategic goals. She has demonstrated experience in leadership development, spiritual care, pastoring, speaking and teaching, and strategic thinking and planning.”

Dr. Kampman will continue to serve on the executive leadership team of Horizon and MCS as Vice President of Community Relations. She previously served in leadership at Horizon, eventually as Vice President of Advancement (2013-2019). She then took a break from employment with Horizon and went on to earn a Doctor of Ministry degree in Leadership and Spiritual Formation from George Fox University.

An ordained minister with the PAOC, Dr. Kampman has served as an Associate Pastor at Westside Pentecostal Church and Connect Church YXE, both in Saskatoon (2019-2022), and since 2019 she has served as a Spiritual Care Practitioner, most recently with St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. She is also an accomplished businessperson as co-owner and operator of Bertohn Dairy Farms since 1991. Outside of employment, Dr. Kampman has provided leadership as a board member for the Saskatoon Christian School (including as chair) and for Women’s Journey of Faith.

This year at Horizon Seminary, Dr. Kampman will continue to provide leadership to Horizon’s Women’s Cohort, teach a course on the Spiritual Formation of Leaders, and co-teach with Dr. Martini the course, “A Biblical Theology of Leadership.”

Announcing Dr. Nataliia Khromyak as the New Program Coordinator for the M.A. in Biblical & Theological Studies at Horizon Seminary

Dr. Nataliia Khromyak will join the faculty as Coordinator for our M.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies program, with her role commencing in June, 2025.

Dr. Khromyak brings a wealth of experience, previously serving at L’viv Theological Seminary in Ukraine, first as Assistant Academic Dean and then as Academic Dean (2005-2021). Valerie Penney (from PAOC Mission Global) comments that, “Nataliia served as the welcoming face of L’viv Theological Seminary, always making others feel comfortable.”

Dr. Andrew Gabriel, VP Academics at Horizon and Master’s College & Seminary (MCS), remarks,

“We are blessed to have Dr. Khromyak join our faculty. She was the first Pentecostal woman to earn a doctorate in theology in Ukraine, and she is uniquely qualified for this role given her expertise in both theology and biblical studies.”

Dr. Khromyak completed her doctorate in theology in 2018 from National Pedagogical Dragomanov University (Kyiv, Ukraine). In addition to her Master of Religious Studies degree from the same university, she also holds a Master of Bible and Theology degree from Evangel Theological Seminary (Kyiv), and she is one of the editors of the first Greek-Ukrainian interlinear New Testament.

Dr. Khromyak will join the faculty of Horizon and MCS, while also continuing to serve in the library at MCS in Mississauga. As a part of her faculty role, she will be teaching New Testament Greek this coming year for MCS and Horizon College & Seminary.
