From its inception, the book of Revelation has inspired imaginations and spawned diverse interpretations: it perplexes readers even as it fills them with wonder. Revelation provokes feelings of despair and hope. Why, then, do we so often shy away from reading this book?

People typically avoid reading Revelation because they find it difficult to understand. In the first place, they struggle to decipher its symbols—primarily because these images held different meanings for first-century Jewish readers than they do for us. In the second place, if we read Revelation primarily as a book of predictions about the future (e.g., nuclear war, economic chaos, natural disasters), we become confused or even alarmed. Dark images fill our hearts and minds—even leading people to despair. Such interpretations, however, do not capture the heartbeat of the book of Revelation.

Instructed by Dr. Susan Wendel, Horizon Seminary offers a course that unpacks the meaning of Revelation within its Jewish context. From this vantage point, the book ultimately aims to shape the identity and worldview of early followers of Jesus. Beyond simply providing an outline of what will happen at the end of time, the text still speaks to us about how to live as faithful disciples in our own times.
