Caring for those who care for you

During the month of October, it has become common practice among many of our churches to show love, care, support to our pastoral leaders. There are a number of reasons to participate!

1. It’s Biblical.

No, you won’t find ‘celebrate your pastor in October’ within scripture, but you will see scriptural encouragements to honour and care for those who serve in ministry:

“The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honour, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.” (1 Tim. 5:17-18)

“Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12-13)

2. It’s energizing!

Ministry can be challenging and tiring, but being appreciated brings life and joy to those who serve.

“Gracious words are a honeycomb,
sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
(Proverbs 16:24)

“Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow.” (Hebrews 13:11)

3. It’s fun!

Generosity and kind words and actions for another is just FUN! Generosity leads to JOY! (1 Cor. 8:2 – the Macedonian church gave with joy!)

thank you card pastor

How can you show appreciation to your pastor(s)?

Well, that’s ultimately up to you and your creativity, but here’s a few fun ideas:

  • Provide for a date night with their spouse;
  • Gift card for their favourite hobby store;
  • Sports jersey;
  • Home baked treats (perhaps a monthly rotation of families dropping off some goodies);
  • “World’s Greatest Pastor” mug (ha ha);
  • Invite them over to your homes for meals;
  • Audible or other helpful subscription;
  • Book of encouraging notes from congregational and community members;
  • The list can go on…

Thank you for caring for those who care for you!
